Why is Ruth Johnson in race for Secretary of State?

Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson announced her candidacy for the Republican nomination for Secretary of State two days ago, making her a very late entrant.

Eric B. from Michigan Liberal wondered about her candidacy on our facebook page. Here is my answer (Joe M.):

She doesn’t believe that Bouchard will get the nomination for governor. Therefore, in the geographical balancing act regularly played by the GOP, Johnson thinks that one of the candidates must come from Oakland County, and she wants to preserve that opportunity.
